Nourishment Beyond the Classroom

Backpack Blessings began partnering with the Food Bank in April 2025. What began as an act of support for students has turned into a valuable resource for families in need.

They currently distribute nearly 500 backpacks each week during the school year to students across several schools in Marietta, Georgia.

In our service area, 1 in 5 children experiences food insecurity. For many children, school meals may be the only time they have access to food. But when weekends, holidays, and school breaks arrive, that reliable access disappears.

“When we started the volunteer work, it was eye-opening to see how many of the students were experiencing hunger,” said Erin, Operations Manager of the pantry. “When we realized we needed more resources for food, the Food Bank stepped up to partner with us.”

“The bags we provide include two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners, and snacks in each bag. Items are carefully selected to be shelf-stable, kid-friendly, and microwaveable,” said Erin.

Bradley Hill, Executive Director of the pantry, has plans for expansion to reach every grade level in the schools they serve. “The bags don’t just contain food, they also contain compassion.

Volunteers regularly include notes of encouragement. We want the kids to feel seen, loved, and valued,” Bradley said.

“Many of these children live in tough situations, so we try to hold summer distributions so kids can stay fed,” Erin explained.

Providing food beyond the school day helps bridge that gap and supports children’s health, learning, and well-being.

As they prepare for the school year ahead, Backpack Blessings invites the community to get involved.
