Learning to Lead

Michayla discovered the Food Bank’s Youth Programs through her counselor. Her initial involvement in the Learn and Serve Day inspired her to delve deeper into learning about food insecurity.

“Food insecurity is everywhere, but I can see it in our students. My school provides meals for students outside of school hours. The school always provides additional snacks to kids who ask for them.”

Students like Michayla have the power to create lasting change. By engaging young people in service, education, and advocacy, we are empowering the next generation to develop innovative solutions to end hunger.

Michayla plans to use her experience with the Youth Programs and implement them as much as possible in her school and community.

“If you’re food insecure, you’re not going to be healthy. If you’re not healthy, you can’t work or attend school. If you can’t attend school or work, you put your livelihood at risk.” said Michayla.

Michayla’s favorite part of the week was serving our neighbors at the Community Food Center – Stone Mountain.

“I can volunteer anywhere, but the personalities, history, and people here make this experience unique, and that’s why I want to come back.”

Michayla is excited about organizing a youth symposium about food insecurity at her school, obtaining her driver’s license, and becoming a certified nursing assistant at 16.

Her ultimate goal is to become a registered nurse, combining her passion for healthcare with her dedication to community service.
