On Sunday, May 3, I embarked upon my second SNAP Challenge. I am attempting to live and eat on the average budget of a SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) recipient. The average daily allowance for a SNAP recipient in GA is $4.17 a day. However, Atlanta Community Food Bank in collaboration with Wholesome Wave GA, Community Farmers Market, Georgia Organics and GA Food Oasis is sponsoring SNAP Challenge 2015, May 10-17 where instead of the typical $4.17, those taking the challenge would be allowed a budget of $8.34 a day!
Wholesome Wave Georgia (WWG) believes all Georgians should have access to good, wholesome and locally-grown food. To support their mission, WWG currently partners with 37 farmers market in Atlanta and across the state to double every SNAP dollar spent at the markets. So while on the SNAP Challenge, by shopping at a WWG Partner Farmer’s Market, your daily budget doubles to $8.34 a day!
My journey began at the Grant Park Farmers Market. Above are a few video blogs of the first days on the SNAP Challenge 2015. Follow me as I experience the struggles and revelations of a week of not only trying to eat -- but eat healthily and well -- on double SNAP budget.
