Take Action Against Hunger

In our line of work, numbers can be informative and overwhelming at the same time. Personally, the infographics above fall into both categories for me. In each case, they communicate a problem that is too big to ignore. But what do you do if you don’t ignore it? What can I do about an issue as large as childhood hunger in the state of Georgia? Good news: there are things that actually do work, and there are things that you actually can do.

What works? SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as “food stamps”) works. 91 percent of the households that receive SNAP benefits live below the poverty line, and 76 percent of them include a child, a senior or a disabled individual. SNAP benefits help strengthen hungry Georgia families by putting food on the table when they need it most. Right now, our elected officials in Washington are debating whether or not to slash funding to this vital program. Become an advocate and let them know that we care about our neighbors here in Georgia and we expect them to protect SNAP funding.

Community works. Last fiscal year, our network of more than 600 partner agencies helped distribute over 37 million pounds of food they received from ACFB’s warehouse. This food was provided to hungry people in 29 counties across metro Atlanta and north Georgia, and it didn’t happen by accident. It happened because ordinary, everyday people decided that it wasn’t okay for 28.3 percent of Georgia children to worry about where their next meal was coming from. These people moved from being ordinary to extraordinary by deciding to actually do something about it: volunteering at a food pantry, cooking lunch at a community kitchen, delivering meals to homebound seniors, donating to the work of ACFB – by doing good work in defiance of bad numbers. There are many more ways that you can be extraordinary and strengthen your community by joining ACFB’s hunger relief efforts. Find everything you need to know about volunteering, hosting a food and fund drive, attending a benefit event and more here on our website. Take a look around and take action against hunger.
