In our nation, nearly 49 million people are facing hunger, 15.9 million of whom are children. When school is out in the summertime, many children no longer have access to meal assistance. Of the more than 21.5 million low-income children eating free or reduced price lunch during the school year, only 3.5 million are accessing a summer feeding program, leaving millions of children unserved. Many families are left struggling to stretch already limited food budgets even further with yet another gap to fill. Data from Share our Strength finds that families spend an additional $300 dollars on groceries during the summer months. SNAP benefits also went down last November making it more difficult for families to make ends meet.
In our 29 county service area, a number of our partner agencies host summer feeding programs. These are places where a child can get a meal when they need it. The Atlanta Community Food Bank supports the Georgia Food Bank Association in their efforts to mobilize support for the summer food service program.
