Your gift to ACFB delivers a healthy return. With each $1 you donate, we can provide more than $9 in groceries for someone in need.
We recently met Jennivee and her son, Darrell, when we were looking for people willing to tell us their story for our new Food Bank video. Jennivee and Darrell both found themselves on disability due to health issues and found help at Marietta Church of God, one of our 600 partner agencies across metro Atlanta and north Georgia.
“You don’t quite make enough on disability to really catch all the bills,” says Darrell. “Something has to go,” Jennivee adds with a wry smile. Due to the food they receive, they’re able to get the medications they need and put gas in the car in order to get around.
“The gift that the Food Bank gives helps others. It goes on to give into that person and that person gives to this person,” Darrell says. “It keeps going.” Jennivee and Darrell try to offer help to other family members and friends who may not have the means or transportation to get to the pantry themselves.
The community that they have found at Marietta Church of God has also given them a sense of friendship and blessings. “Not only the food, but the people up here, the prayers, the smiles, the consideration for us as people,” Jennivee says. “It gives us hope.”
May is Older Americans Month in the Feeding America food bank network. The food insecurity rate among seniors in the U.S. has more than doubled since 2001, to 4.8 million seniors. In Georgia, 1 in 10 seniors are food insecure. Help us #SolveSeniorHunger.
