Yesterday was the Hunger Walk/Run and it couldn’t have been a more perfect day. With the temperature hitting 70º and the sun shining, approximately 15,000 Georgians came out to walk or run against hunger.
The park filled up starting at noon (take THAT, Daylight Saving Time!) and participants feasted on Sodexo refreshments as well as food truck grub from Yumbii, The Blaxican, The Healthy Nut, The Pickle, and refreshing pops from The King of Pops. We also weren’t lacking for entertainment and fun--the kids’ area was packed, the Imperial Circus OPA wowed, and the Arby’s Foundation trailer had carnival games for kids of all ages. The Nationwide trailer brought their NASCAR show car, and Atlantans showed their team spirit with the Silverbacks, Hawks, Dream and Falcons all represented. DJ Bigg H from Crowd Control spun the jams that got everyone pumped before the walk/run. Our emcees--11 Alive’s Brenda Wood, V103’s Big Tigger, WAOK’s Lorraine Jacques-White, and 92.9 The Game’s Rachel Baribeau and Randy Cross--did an amazing job. Last, but certainly not least, The Sounds of Essence and Get Fit Atlanta got the crowd ready to go with great live music, dancing and a warm up routine.
When it came down to it though, 15,000 of you took to the streets of Atlanta and walked or ran for hunger. Nothing compares to the sight of all of you going down the road, under the Olympic rings and past the Capitol, united for a cause such as ours.
Stay tuned to our blog for reports on the amount of money you helped raise. We’ll report those numbers as soon as we have them. But for now, to our sponsors, volunteers, benefiting partners and all of YOU--the ones who started a team, came out on your own, raised money, donated, volunteered--you all helped make this year’s Hunger Walk/Run truly incredible.
