It’s that time of year again! We’re T-minus 23 days and counting to Hunger Walk/Run 2012 on March 11! Hunger Walk/Run is one of the oldest walk-for-a-cause events in Atlanta. Since 1984, people have gathered to walk in response to the issue of hunger. It brings people of different faiths, backgrounds and ages together to raise awareness and funds for those who struggle to put food on the table. And it’s needed now more than ever.
With the current economic situation, more and more people are finding themselves in a vulnerable position --trying to figure out where their next meal is coming from or how they’re going to manage paying rent or mortgage. In Georgia alone, nearly 1.7 million people are living in poverty. And we’re not just talking about adults --nearly 1 in 4 Georgia children live in poverty as well. The Hunger Walk/Run benefits six organizations with hunger relief outreach programs.
In addition to ACFB, Action Ministries - United Methodists, Episcopal Charities of Atlanta, Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta, Lutheran Services of Georgia and the St. Vincent de Paul Society all benefit from this event. “What we love about the Hunger Walk is it gives our volunteers who are spread out across 35 Georgia counties an opportunity to come together to walk shoulder to shoulder in common mission to fight hunger,” says Caryn Stofko, director of communication at Society of St. Vincent de Paul. “[The money raised is] distributed to all those groups and they use it to buy food for their pantry or grocery gift cards for their clients. On a larger scale, we use it to support our perishable food distribution program. It’s a new program so we had to purchase refrigeration and a refrigerated truck, and these were partially funded through the money we raised at the Hunger Walk.”
It’s free for walkers to participate, but a $25 donation is encouraged, and those who donate $25 or more will receive a Hunger/Walk Run t-shirt. There is a $25 fee for runners as well, and all runners will receive a special moisture-wicking t-shirt. This year’s event is all about fun and excitement at Turner Field and along the route--including a special area for kids, food, bands, DJs, performers, and more. Brenda Wood of 11Alive and Mara Davis of 92.9 davefm are back as our emcees.
Also, in addition to food provided by Sodexo, this will be the first year for---Food Trucks! Yumbii, Ibiza Bites, The Pickle and King of Pops will be out there with us. How could you want to miss that? Back in 1984, the Walk was 10 miles long and 1,000 walkers raised $30,000. In 2011, the Walk/Run was 3.12 miles / 5.02 km long, and 13,000 walkers and runners raised over $500,000. Will 2012 smash all the records? We hope so. Sign up today at www.HWR2012.org.
